Support Committee Meeting October 9th

Dear Parents/Guardians

Welcome to the 2024-25 training year with GGFG Cadets.

Thank you for expressing interest in being part of the support committee.

Our first meeting of the year is scheduled for Wednesday October 9th at 6:45. An agenda will be circulated in advance.

One of our main functions is to support the cadets in raising funds to cover special activities for the cadets. At our upcoming meeting we will be discussing plans for the coming year, including special fundraising initiatives. We invite you to join us and bring your creative ideas for fundraising activities.

Let’s put the FUN in fundraising!

We look forward to seeing you on October 9th at the Drill Hall.

Gail and Sarah

Support Committee Co-Chairs.

National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

September 30th marks the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, which honours the children who never returned home and survivors of residential schools, as well as their families and communities.

This day is a powerful reminder of our shared responsibility to acknowledge the painful legacy of residential schools and to actively commit to building a better future.  Reconciliation is a collective responsibility of all Canadians, let this day remind us of our shared duties to learn, reflect and take meaningful action to create a more equitable future.

The Commander of the Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers has authorized the wear of Orange T-shirts leading up to the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (23-30 Sep 2024). Cadets and staff are authorized to replace their elemental-coloured t-shirt during their local unit parade night for an orange t-shirt if they wish.

Wherever you are in Canada, please take the time to join in commemorative activities and acknowledge that every child matters.  Some information on some campaigns can be found below.

New Training Year 2024-25

Cadets/Parents/Guardians,

September is just around the corner and the staff and volunteers are excited to start off a new training year.

First Training Night

Our first night back is Wednesday September 4th 6:30pm-9:00pm

This first training night is important as key administration needs to be completed by the cadets, to ensure they can participate in exciting activities in September and October. Delays in completed paperwork may lead to cadets missing out on training opportunities.

Parent/Guardian Information Sessions

  • We will be hosting two (2) parent/guardian information sessions, one virtual and one in person.

  • We highly recommend you attend one, as may questions you may have as a parent/guardian of a new cadet, and overview of important activities during the year will be covered.

  • A follow up email with the virtual meeting invite, as well as confirmed dates for the in-person session will follow in September.

Retiring cadets/unit changes

  • Any cadets not returning this year must let us know by emailing the unit inbox and return all issued uniform pieces during a regular training night.

  • For cadets switching units, you must still return your uniforms before we release your file to the other unit.

Communications

As a reminder regarding communications:

  • All important information (training schedule, cancellations, timings, registrations, uniform requests) can be found on our website. Cadets and parents/guardians should be checking it weekly for updates.

  • If you have questions, your first point of contact should be our unit inbox which is monitored from Sept – June.

  • Cadets are briefed on upcoming activities every Wednesday night during our closing parade at 8:45pm. Parents/guardians picking cadets are welcome to watch and listen.

  • While the unit does occasionally send out reminder emails at the start, mid, and end of year on big events, we do not send out emails for every activity we conduct.  The reason is that its administratively burdensome and can lead to miscommunication. That is why all the information is posted on the website.

  • The unit is run by volunteers and reservist CAF members. My staff and volunteers work hard on top of their full-time jobs and family commitments to deliver an excellent program. Please be mindful of this if you experience a delay in response via email.

We look forward to welcoming new and current cadets. We have a very exciting year planned!

Start of Training Year 2023-2024

Welcome back everyone!

As the Commanding Officer for 2784 GGFG I am excited to welcome cadets, parents, staff, and volunteers back to an exciting new training year. We hope you all had a relaxing summer and those who got to attend summer training learned new skills and challenged themselves.

We have an engaging training year planned for the cadets, with the return of our beloved teams (marksmanships, drill, band, biathlon), weekend field training opportunities, and a variety of fun area-directed and regional-directed activities (expedition, CAF familiarization, obstacle course, etc.).

Many of these activities start relatively soon in the fall but before previous cadets or new cadets can participate, the beginning of the year administration needs to be completed. Attendance this month is critical to get Annual Validation Forms and other documents completed.

We have a Parent Information Night/Support committee meeting scheduled for Wed Sept 13 at 6:45 pm in the Heritage Board Room. We highly encourage parents to attend as I will be reviewing important information regarding administration, training activities, schedule, etc. This is the time to ask all those questions you may have about the program.

Looking forward to seeing you all tonight!
