PROMOTIONS

Rank promotion criteria

Upon joining the unit, all recruits begin with the rank of Cadet (Cdt). Throughout their time in the program, cadets have the opportunity to be promoted to higher ranks, which reflect both their experience in the program and level of responsibility in the chain of command.

The criteria below reflect the minimum prerequisites for promotion to each rank. Promotions are not automatic, and are awarded based on merit. Additional factors that may be considered include:

  • dress and deportment;

  • conduct, discipline, and attitude;

  • participation;

  • response to direction;

  • ability to interact positively and comfortably with others;

  • ability to make sound judgements regarding one’s own actions;

  • willingness to accept responsibility;

  • ability to solve problems effectively;

  • ability to communicate effectively;

  • ability to set a positive example for others; and

  • initiative.

Guardsman (Gdsm)

  • Enrolled in the cadet program for a minimum period of 5 months.

  • Note: the rank of Guardsman is specific to Foot Guards regiments. In most army cadet units, this rank is known as Lance Corporal (LCpl).

Corporal (Cpl)

  • Minimum time in previous rank: 5 months, and

  • Completed/fast-tracked the Green Star level training program.

Master Corporal (MCpl)

  • Minimum time in previous rank: 6 months, and

  • Completed/fast-tracked the Red Star level training program.

Sergeant (Sgt)

  • Minimum time in previous rank: 6 months, and

  • Completed the Silver Star level training program.

Colour Sergeant (CSgt)

  • Minimum time in previous rank: 6 months,

  • Completed the Gold Star level training program, and

  • Identified as a successful candidate for a leadership appointment through the selection board process.

  • Note: the rank of Colour Sergeant is specific to Foot Guards regiments. In most army cadet units, this rank is known as Warrant Officer (WO).

Master Warrant Officer (MWO)

  • Minimum time in previous rank: 6 months, and

  • Identified as a successful candidate for a leadership appointment through the selection board process.
